What is Alcohol Addiction?

The fact that you have found yourself on this page means you probably have some knowledge of alcoholism. But the truth is, most people do not have a complete understanding. Science is discovering more about how the brain works every year. Much research is being done into how addiction works in the brain. The Healing Center creates it’s alcohol rehab in Cherry Hill NJ program on the scientific facts about alcoholism.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, “Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a medical condition characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences. It encompasses the conditions that some people refer to as alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, alcohol addiction, and the colloquial term, alcoholism. Considered a brain disorder, AUD can be mild, moderate, or severe”. So, how do you know if this is a problem or not? Sometimes the consequences of drinking might make it clear. Unfortunately for many people, denial and selective memory can obscure the truth.

Here are some questions which may help clear the fog:

  • Have you tried to reduce or stop drinking on your own unsuccessfully? More than once?
  • Would you refuse to go on a vacation if you knew there would be no alcohol available?
  • Do you have trouble sleeping if you go too long without a drink?
  • Is alcohol the first thing you think of when you get really upset or angry?
  • Has anyone ever expressed concern about your drinking behavior?
  • Have you been late to work or called out sick more than once due to drinking?

Someone who answers ‘yes’ to one or more of these questions likely has an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. It is important to seek professional help from a licensed addiction specialist if you are questioning your relationship with alcohol.

New Jersey Alcohol Addiction Statistics

New Jersey’s Department of Health tracks alcohol consumption and addiction to provide help and funding. Binge drinking and excessive alcohol consumption are real problems in New Jersey. Not only do they lead to dangerous DUI incidents, but alcohol addiction compromises health and shortens lifespans.

People who drink to excess are more likely to be sexually abused or to abuse someone else. They are also more likely to be victims of violence or to be violent themselves. The long list of negative effects of alcohol abuse is why the state monitors this data. Working in partnership with alcohol rehabilitation programs in New Jersey, the state aims to improve health and save lives.

Here are just a few statistics from the NJ Department of Health, which illustrate the problem:

  • Excessive drinking kills at least 1,754 New Jerseyans every year.
  • This adds up to more than 50,000 years of potential life lost every single year.
  • Binge drinking by high school students in NJ outpaces the national average.
  • More than 25% of middle school students in NJ report alcohol use.
  • More than 10% of residents admit they are chronic, heavy drinkers.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Addiction

Whether you’re trying to help yourself or someone else get into an alcohol rehab in New Jersey, it helps to understand the signs and symptoms of alcoholism. Knowing what to look for in yourself or someone else can save a life.

Drinking occasionally and in moderation usually isn’t a problem. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that moderate drinking amounts to 1-2 drinks a day maximum. Anything more than that starts to be under the heavy or binge drinking category.

Behavioral symptoms of alcohol addiction include:

  • Being unable to limit how much alcohol you drink in a day.
  • A steady decline in personal hygiene and health
  • Drinking at times when it’s unsafe, like when you are driving or swimming.
  • Needing to drink more alcohol to get the same effect (developing a tolerance).
  • Someone who keeps drinking despite consequences, like work or family problems.

When someone abuses alcohol consistently, the body will become dependent on it. This means that if they stop drinking, they will experience unpleasant and dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Here are the primary physical symptoms of an alcohol abuse disorder to look for:

  • Alcohol withdrawal symptoms like nausea, sweating and shaking.
  • Smelling of alcohol at inappropriate times, at work, in the morning etc.
  • Bloodshot eyes, pale and clammy skin.
  • Relatively sudden weight gain or loss.
  • Tremors or shaky hands.

If you or someone you know is exhibiting these signs or symptoms, it’s time to talk to them and suggest they get an evaluation. A problem with alcohol consumption should be taken seriously as it can lead to permanent and life-changing consequences. When it comes to alcohol addiction, it’s better to face that uncomfortable or awkward conversation than to keep blinders on.

The Importance of Professional Treatment for Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive condition that affects not only the individual but also their loved ones, relationships, and overall quality of life. While some may attempt to overcome alcohol dependence on their own, professional treatment offers the structure, support, and medical care necessary for long-term recovery. Attempting to stop drinking without supervision can be dangerous—even life-threatening—due to the potential for severe withdrawal symptoms such as seizures, hallucinations, and delirium tremens (DTs). This is why professional treatment is the first crucial step in the recovery process.

Beyond treating withdrawal, professional treatment addresses the root causes of addiction through evidence-based therapies and a supportive environment. Licensed therapists and counselors help individuals uncover the emotional, psychological, or traumatic factors that may contribute to substance use. Treatment programs often include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), group counseling, relapse prevention education, and holistic practices that promote whole-person healing. These resources equip individuals with the coping strategies they need to navigate life without returning to alcohol.

Additionally, professional treatment offers accountability, structure, and a sense of community—three elements that are difficult to replicate alone. Whether in an inpatient facility or outpatient program, individuals are surrounded by trained professionals and peers who understand the challenges of recovery. This sense of support can significantly reduce the risk of relapse and increase the chances of sustained sobriety. In short, professional treatment is not just about getting sober—it’s about learning how to live a healthier, more fulfilling life free from the grip of alcohol.
